Frequently Asked Questions:

I think I have a hearing loss, what is the first step?

It is important to schedule an appointment with a certified Audiologist who will assess your hearing loss. The primary function of the audiologist is to determine the type of hearing loss you have: conductive (about 5 % of all cases) which requires medical intervention and is just a "temporary" hearing loss in most cases; sensorineural hearing loss a permanent hearing loss, which accounts for about 90% of all cases and would involve the fitting of hearing aids; and mixed (a combination of both of the above losses), which accounts for about 5% of all cases and which may or may not require medical intervention but would benefit from amplification or hearing aids. An audiologist would then be able to determine if you need medical intervention or amplification (hearing aids).

How frequently should my hearing be tested?

If you have a hearing loss, we would recommend that your thresholds be check on an annual basis, or if you feel there has been a change in your hearing. In addition, there are certain symptoms like dizziness, buzzing or ringing in your ears, or fullness that are "red flags" and would warrant additional testing.

What is the difference between an Audiologist and a Hearing Aid dispenser?

An audiologist has a Master's degree in Audiology, and has extensive knowledge in acoustics, physiology, anatomy, and hearing aid technology.

What are your qualifications?

How do I know what brand or type of hearing aid is best for me?

Hearing aids come in all sizes, with many different options in terms of circuitry and capabilities. We will do our best to get to know you, asking many questions, and will help you determine which hearing aid may be best for you based on your hearing loss, your cosmetic needs (size), your lifestyle, and your budget. We believe in fitting the patient with the most appropriate amplification based on the above issues, however, you will be an active participant in the selection of your hearing aid. You can be assured that you will never be "over fit" in our office.

How much do hearing aids cost?

Hearing aids range from about $1,000 each all the way up to $3,400 each. The cost depends upon the size and the capabilities. The more technical and smaller the hearing aid, the costlier it becomes.

What is included in the price of the hearing aid?

In our office, the price includes all follow-up visits during the manufacturer's warranty period, which may be up to two years.

What if I have a hearing aid that is not functioning and I want to have it fixed?

We fix most brands of hearing aids, as we have accounts set up with most major manufacturers. In some cases the hearing aid may not be adjusted correctly, and we will be able to reprogram it to better suit your hearing needs right here in our office. If we can fix an out-of-warranty hearing aid in our office, we will only charge a minimum office visit which will not exceed $25.

What is a money back guarantee?

In the State of Colorado you have a 30-day trial period. If you are not satisfied with the hearing aid in that time, you are entitled to a full refund less testing and fitting costs. We are so confident in our fittings that our office offers a 60-day trial period. We do not want you to have a hearing aid that you are not satisfied with.

How long do batteries last?

Batteries last from five days to two weeks, depending on size and usage. Batteries often cost about a dollar a battery; therefore, expect to spend about $50 a year on batteries. In our office, if you pay by cash or check when the hearing aid is dispensed you will receive a full year's supply of batteries. Otherwise you will be added to our Battery Club: for every five packs of batteries you purchase from us, you will receive the sixth pack free. We keep your club card here so you don't have to carry another card in your wallet.
